Working remotely in Ukraine, I was the systems support for a small chain of shops in the United Kingdom, responsible for 24 hour technical support on their IT infrastructure, EPOS system (see below), applications and maintaining their website. I also designed, created and process their HTML based email marketing. Using VPN technology and Windows networking I was able to work seamlessly and remotely from Ukraine, such that maintenance could be performed immediately
Client Marriage and dating agency website
Front end HTML5, CSS, CSS media queries, ASP and JavaScript
Back end Microsoft SQL Server 2012
Designing the UI and controlling the UX testing, overseeing a team of 5 developers as they implemented the customer specification. The site was designed to allow several hundred users to be online and querying the database concurrently. Due to the high levels of fraud within this sector our client requested many security and other features to be built in:
* Field level encryption on all user accounts
* SQL injection prevention ;
* Ability for the uploading of new and changed user images whilst retaining all previous images
* A full messaging system for users to contact each other without the need for email
* Parsing of every message for inappropriate content, and removal of those messages
* External payment processing
* HTML email generation for marketing profiles
These features ensured that all users had a ``clean'' experience on the site. The payment processing was integrated with a reputable UK based bank, removing the need for storage and processing of credit card details through the clients database. The site had to create and update HTML webpages at run time to store each user's basic profile on a single webpage for search engine optimisation. Using CSS media queries the site could run on any device from an iPhone to a PC without the need for separate pages for each device type
The site was multilingual, and allowed the client to make changes to the wording and languages for every webpage locally without the need for outside support. Using VBA and Microsoft Access I created a database program for the client that re-wrote the webpages and uploaded them every time they needed to change the wording on the site
Client Exclusive marriage agency website
Front end HTML5, CSS, CSS media queries, ASP and JavaScript
Back end Microsoft Access/Word/Excel
Designing the UI and controlling the UX testing, overseeing a team of 3 developers as they implemented the customer specification. The client insisted that no data was to be stored on a webserver, all user enquires had to process immediately on the site and then directly sent to the local office where the staff would do the main processing as the queries arrived. Using Microsoft Excel, Word and Access I created the local fully integrated processing system
Client E-commerce marketplace website
Front end HTML5, CSS, CSS media queries, ASP and JavaScript
Back end Microsoft SQL Server 2012
Designing the UI and controlling the UX testing, overseeing two teams; 1 team of 10 front end developers and 1 team of 3 database designers and network specialists as they implemented the customer specification. A full ecommerce retail site using clustered servers with Microsoft SQL Server as the back-end. HTML5, CSS, CSS media queries, ASP and JavaScript for the front end. Without giving confidential details the site is comparable to eBay and Amazon merged together (but not on that scale!) due to an NDA I can only give these very limited details
Project Software license code generator
Front end VBA/Microsoft Access
Back end N/A
This application creates 25 digit license keys for software package installation and validation. The key encodes the user name, email address and package version and some other details into one unique key. During install of a package and the entry of a valid key, correct version of the software is installed
Project: Copy protection application
Front end VBA
Back end N/A
On install of an application this module records and encodes the manufacturer's serial number from the windows system hard disk and the processor ID. Every time an application runs it checks this data again and compares it to the original data stored during install. This prevents users from copying the software to another machine

HobbyToyGame Limited
Director
Owner of a small chain of toy and hobby retail stores. Starting from a single store I built the company into a successful chain.
* Designed and built the networked EPOS system hardware for the stores
* Wrote the EPOS software and stock control systems ;
* Designed and built the website ;
* Created the staff training and operations manuals
Apart from the normal functions of an EPOS system, this allowed instant application of suppliers promotions and pricing and, more importantly, custom receipt printing (down to an individual product), this allowed each store to automatically upsell and advertise upcoming product releases. We marketed the stores, products and instore promotions with individual HTML emails
I was responsible for staff management, stock, purchasing and accounts. I created all the product literature, advertising and promotional materials and instore promotions. The website featured microsites for many of the individual suppliers product ranges
To attract custom I created several PR events, the biggest of which was a promotional Star Wars day for each store. A Star Wars day comprised of us filling the town centre with Darth Vader, Tie Fighter pilots and a LOT of Stormtroopers. We specifically tied the Star Wars promotion days with suppliers to promote their Star Wars products. The characters would take pictures with children (and adults), promote the products and stores, chat with the local media and generally create a buzz in the whole town. Advance promotion via both the town centre information systems and on the day the local newspapers attending ensured that the publicity continued after the event. In my portfolio document I have included some images from these events. I sold the shops and moved to Ukraine when I married my wife

Greylight Limited
Director
I created a very successful online collectables store. In 2000 I set up one of the first online commercial collectable sites in the UK. Primarily selling Pokémon© and Yu-Gi-Oh© products. By 2010, when I sold the company, the website was one of the top ten in the world (in its category). Over the ten years of my ownership, I wrote the initial website and continually upgraded it to make use of the most current technologies. Based on Microsoft SQL server the site had over 25,000 products and processed hundreds of orders per day. I marketed the site primarily using HTML emails and Photoshop
As the company grew we expanded into different areas, we were one of the first companies invited by Amazon.co.uk to test and integrate with their new marketplace system, and we partnered with Ideal world, the second largest television shopping channel in the U.K. We created several integrated subsidiaries to enable us to dominate the product market. See the next few entries for individual details

Authentic TV
Presenter
Unlike Ideal World, where the shows were live, the shows for Authentic TV were pre-recorded in advance then cycled airings as infomercials. I co-presented the shows with various celebrities and due to the specialised nature of the products I had to design and produce the video promotional trailers for each show using adobe Premiere Pro.
All the show strands were based around specialist collectable products that I sourced from the USA and Japan. Sourcing these products involved regular trips to the USA and Japan to build contacts and sign contracts with manufacturers and suppliers.
I had to prepare design products for 8 shows at a time, they would then all be pre-recorded over two days. The shows were designed to be modular, as products sold out I could re-edit the show and remove these, and insert new products.
Product information had to be supplied and ready for their website. Again I had to carefully design the running order of the products, which products would ``upsell'' other products and how to feature each product on screen. We had very tight budgets and time constraints for every show recording, requiring very detailed and accurate planning that complies with all broadcasting and advertising regulations

Created, designed, wrote and published a nationally available specialist magazine based around the products sold through our website and TV shows and also to promote the national events. The magazine was published every four weeks and was sold through independent stores, WH Smiths, Menzies and Sainsburys. After the first year I took a back seat and only wrote occasional articles and sub editing, concentrating on the selling of advertising space. The magazine continued publication for over five years.

Cardshows Limited
Director
Created a subsidiary company to promote the products we sold on our online store. We held a tournament event in in each of two different cities around the UK every weekend. Each of the tournaments were attended by 75-400 children aged 8-18. Each tournament was split into specific age groups and skill sets. Due to the nature of the product our tournaments attracted a high proportion of disabled, Asperger's and autistic children. One specialist Asperger's school brought a whole class of children to every event we held in Edinburgh. I had to organise each event, create the proper ratio of staff to players, all the promotion and advertising and ensure that each event was safe and secure.
The main website had a separate microsite for each event day, where the players would register and book their place for the event. Each microsite was updated at the end of the day with all the tournament data, photographs of the players and a feature on the winner and his secrets for winning. Having a microsite for each events online registration allowed us a simple way to create and market previous players at each event, using targeted HTML emails.
I designed and created the tournament structure, the software and barcoding system for the players and in conjunction with the events and the e-Store I also co-wrote and published a national available monthly magazine that tied in to both the tournaments and the online store. The three entities all promoted each other. The company was sold and the elements absorbed into the product manufacturers own systems

GV Distribution Limited
Director
I created a toy distribution company working primarily with Topps, Konami, Tomy and also individually sourced products. I exclusively licensed, distributed and promoted and line of collectable mini figures named ``Little Tokyos''. The Company became one of the largest distributors of Tomy products in the UK as well as supplying to clients in France and Germany. Alongside the sales I was a consulting specialist working with Tomy on their prototypes and with their prototype designers based in Japan. As part of this role I was also supplying market and consumer response research to these prototypes. When Tomy was bought out there were too many problems with their new structure and vastly reduced product ranges, which eventually lead to the demise of GV Distribution
Director
TASC Solutions Limited
1995 - 2000
I ran a software and employment agency specialising in supplying IT Specialists from India to work on site in the UK and outsourcing large scale projects to be developed in India
The specialists were all trained and tasked with converting legacy systems to more modern software as part of the ``year 2000'' problem. Covering many different skill sets and levels of knowledge, and not only single programmers I would create specialist teams when required. I handled the work permits, accommodation and well-being of all of the contractors. We also outsourced UK software contracts to our partners in India. I was based both in India and the UK, supervising and controlling all the out-sourced projects, ensuring that they all stayed on schedule and budget

A secure system, primarily for agents working in remote locations, to allow the authorising and transfer large sums of funds around the world. Based on prime number mathematics it took the parameters of the transaction and calculated a secure code that authorised the transaction. With this code the agent could then telephone the bank or the company and arrange transfer of funds to a client. With the details of the transaction and the code, the receiver can decrypt the transaction information and confirm that the transfer was genuine, secure and ready for processing

Ideal World
Presenter
I co-presented the shows live every Wednesday and each show involved a huge amount of pre-production and promotion. I had two different show strands, a 6 O'clock show aimed primarily at children under 15, ``the Yu-Gi-Oh show''. The second strand was ``the Candy Model show'', on at 10pm. For both show strands I had to create the weekly briefs for the shows promotional trailers and their production department, and due to the specialised nature of the products I had to design and produce the video promotional trailers for each show using adobe Premiere Pro.
Both show strands were based around specialist collectable products that I sourced from the USA and Japan. Sourcing these products involved regular trips to the USA and Japan to build contacts and sign contracts with manufacturers and suppliers.
Each show had to be planned 4 weeks in advance, product information had to be supplied and ready for their website. As each show was live and the order of products could change depending on customer demand it was vital that I created very detailed briefs on the products for each show director, the running order of the products, which products would ``upsell'' other products and how to feature each product on screen. Live television is a very high pressure environment with very tight budgets and time constraints for every show, requiring very detailed and accurate planning that complies with all broadcasting and advertising regulations
